Why a neck brace can be so important

Neck Brace: Safety combined with individual design

Whether karting, motocross, mountain biking or rallying. Accidents happen from time to time and as much as a rider trusts in his own abilities, safety comes first. The Neck Brace is considered next to the helmet as one of the most important inventions regarding the safety of the drivers. The so-called HANS (Head and Neck Support) system has also become mandatory in Formula 1. The head and neck vertebrae area require special protection due to the large forces that act in motorsports. Especially in the junior area of racing, it is therefore imperative to rely on neck support. We at helmade, together with the manufacturer Ortema, offer you the possibility to create individual neck braces for motocross and karting, which guarantee your safety and at the same time perfectly match your personal racing outfit.

What is a Neck Brace?

A Neck Brace is a ring that you tie around your neck to support your helmet in the event of a crash. In the event of an impact with the head, the resulting energy should be transferred to the shoulder, chest and back. The neck support works for this with a three-point support system. One support point is located on the sternum and one point on the shoulder muscle between the neck and shoulder. The last support point is located on the back, or on the muscles that support the spine. This is to prevent injuries, such as compression or hyperextension of the sensitive cervical spine. In the worst case, an accident without a neck brace can lead to paralysis. The Neck Brace serves as a preventive measure. In addition, the neck brace provides an additional feeling of security as soon as you get used to it. With this feeling, you will achieve top performance on the race track.

Invention of the Neck Brace

Chris Leatt, a South African medical doctor, decided to design a neck brace in 2001. Previously, there was a fatal accident in his circle of acquaintances, which might have been less serious if a neck brace had been used. Chris saw this incident as motivation to develop a protection which should support the cervical spine in case of accidents. The Neck Brace is intended to divert at least a small part of the forces that occur during a fall on the head away from the spine.

Scientific findings on the safety of the neck brace

Since 2008, a U.S. emergency medical service has analyzed the data of more than 8,500 patients involved in accidents at various American Motorcycle Association races and summarized it in a study. It was proven that cervical vertebrae injuries are 89% more likely when not wearing a neck brace. A fracture of the collarbone is also 45% more likely when not wearing a neck guard. These numbers clearly speak for the use of a neck brace. Protect yourself now with your personal neck brace from Ortema and helmade.

HANS- System in the Formula 1

The HANS system is used especially in Formula 1, but is also mandatory in the DTM or other competitions around car racing. HANS is also designed to protect the cervical spine from injury. At the same time, it also prevents the head from hitting the steering wheel in the event of an abrupt stop. For this purpose, the driver's helmet is connected to the HANS system. The neck support itself is also fixed under the vehicle's seat belt. In this way, the forces that occur in the event of an accident are transferred to the seatbelt system and do not completely impact the head, neck or spine. Due to the limited mobility of the head, the introduction of the system caused a lot of criticism among Formula 1 drivers. However, with the modification of the system and the improved mobility, HANS was ultimately able to establish itself with the majority of drivers. The seating position plays an important role in the use of the HANS system. Depending on the sitting position (upright or prone), the angle between the vertical part of the neck guard on the back and the double-sided part pointing forward must be flatter or more acute. The more upright the sitting position, the more acute the angle. Systems between 10 and 40 degrees are offered.
