Every biker and every racer knows the feeling. The helmet is dirty after repeated use. Insects or dirt have stuck to the visor or the outer shell of the helmet, the inner padding begins to smell. Therefore, it is important to clean your helmet regularly from the inside and outside, so that it shines again and the inner padding is not damaged. Regular care ensures that you do not have to replace your helmet so quickly again. In this article, we will therefore give you instructions on how to properly clean your helmet visor, your helmet shell and the inner padding of the helmet.
Especially with the visor, it is important to clean as often as possible, because your visibility can gradually decrease due to dirt on the plastic visor. This makes your driving more unsafe. The visor is very sensitive to scratches. That's why you have to be extremely careful when cleaning them. Here are a few basic tips:
1. Remove the visor so you can clean it from both sides.
2. Be sure to use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge along with a special visor cleaner to remove the dust and dirt on the outside of the visor. Do not use a paper towel or any other dry cloth, as this may cause scratches.
3. Likewise, do not put the visor in a water bath or clean it under running water. For stubborn dirt, you can soak the visor a little with the microfiber cloth and then wipe it lightly. Never rub!
4. Never use glass cleaner or similar household cleaners to clean the helmet visor. These are not good for the surface and also easily lead to scratch marks. Instead, we recommend our helmade visor cleaner, which is specially designed for cleaning helmet visors.
5. Let the visor air dry after cleaning. If you need to do it quickly, you can also use a lint-free cloth. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat sources as this can damage the visor.
6. If the visor is badly damaged or scratched, you should replace it. A damaged or scratched visor can impair your vision and increase the risk of accidents. You can also find any visor that fits your motorsport helmet, motorcycle helmet or scooter helmet on our website.
Just like the helmet visor, the outer helmet shell is often affected by dirt and insects. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. First, remove loose dirt or dust from the outer shell of the helmet with a soft cloth.
2. Avoid aggressive cleaners, solvents or chemicals, as these can damage the outer shell. Hot water can also deform the material. Your safety can no longer be 100% guaranteed.
3. Rinse the helmet thoroughly to remove all soap residues. Make sure that no water gets into the vents or the visor.
4. As with the visor, allow the helmet shell to air dry and stay away from hair dryers or other heat sources.
5. To give your helmet's paint a new shine, you can also use a special helmet polish, which will refresh your helmet's surface and may even remove small scratches. Try our helmade helmet polish, also as a set together with a fine microfiber cloth. Of course, you should only use the polish on shiny helmets, not on matte ones!
One aspect that many neglect is cleaning the inner padding of a helmet. On the one hand, it is unhygienic, as bacteria are created when sweat decomposes in the padding. On top of that, however, the foam becomes increasingly soaked up with dirt particles, which causes the padding to expand and the fit to change. To maintain your safety, you should clean the inner padding regularly. It is best to follow these tips:
1. If the inner padding can be removed, remove it from the helmet by gently pulling it out.
2. It is usually sufficient to wash the padding by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent or, even better, with a special helmet padding cleaner. Be sure to rinse the pad thoroughly so that no soap residue remains.
3. If the helmet's inner padding is not removable, you can still clean it by gently wiping it with a damp cloth, brush or sponge. However, be careful not to use water or detergent in excess, as this can damage the padding.
4. After cleaning the inner pad, let it air dry before putting it back in the helmet. Avoid putting the pad in the dryer or placing it on a heat source, as this can damage the material. Alternatively, you can also use a specially designed helmet dryer. The Stilo helmet dryer works with warm, ozone-rich air and thus kills germs and bacteria. It not only dries the padding, but also eliminates unpleasant odors. It can also be used for other equipment like racing gloves or racing shoes.
To prolong the life of your helmet, you should regularly clean your helmet, both inside and out. As a general rule, it's better to clean often with a little detergent rather than infrequently with a lot of detergent. The more regularly you take care of your helmet, the longer you can use it. So take care of your helmet!
